Gig Review: Sean Paul @ HMV Ritz – June 6

By Danielle Wainwright

Die-hard Sean Paul fans stripped to their underwear and cavorted on the dancefloor when the Jamaican rapper performed in Manchester last week.

The Grammy-award winning artist may have been quiet on the international music scene of late, however it was clear that the legion of fans who turned up at HMV Ritz had tracked his success from the glory days of 2002.

The sold-out show kicked off with a disappointing set by afro-pop artist Fuse ODG – the only highlight being two female dancers plucked from the crowd to join him on stage to bump and grind.

After Fuse ODG’s mercifully short set, Sean Paul’s band warmed up playing a medley of keyboard, drum and synth beats which got the crowd in the mood for the dancehall star’s arrival.

The female-dominated crowd went wild as Sean-Paul came on stage with huge swathes of the audience screaming throughout the show, whipping their tops off and dancing in their underwear.

He began the 90-minute set with 2009 hit So Fine moving onto other chart hits such as Breathe, Baby Boy and Get Busy.

The Zion Lion crooned and danced his way through his high-energy set with two fantastic dancers in tow.

Sean Paul’s voice was pitch perfect and, love him or hate him, he delivered an unbelievable performance which was well worth the ticket price.

After belting out his back catalogue of hits the show trailed off to include covers of Gangnam Style and Harlem Shake, arguably a bad move as many fans appeared more than ready to go home.

However Sean and his band recovered from this temporary blip by performing Temperature, one of his most iconic songs to date and delivered an electric final performance in the way he knows best

Ending on one of his iconic songs to date, ‘Temperature’, Sean Paul and his band gave it one last push and delivered an electric final performance in the way they know best, Ever Blazin’.
