General Election 2024: The transfer of power

It’s the day after the general election and Labour are celebrating a landslide victory – but what happens the day after the night before?

Outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has resigned outside the front of 10 Downing Street, where he made his final speech, a resignation and an apology: “I take responsibility for this loss.”

He will now head the short drive to Buckingham Palace to formally hand his resignation into the King, while 10 Downing Street starts being emptied of the Sunak’s possessions.

Meanwhile Sir Keir Starmer will now be invited to form a new government and will ask the King for permission to do so before formally becoming the Prime Minister.

Next, a moment of glamour for Starmer, photographs with the Monarch and a regal ride down the Mall as he heads to Downing Street for the first time.

Usually, the turnover of power happens swiftly, and Starmer will likely make his first speech outside Downing Street this afternoon.

Following this there will be an announcement of his cabinet, those MPs who will be closest to him in government.
