An outreach organisation is developing plans to reinvigorate Rochdale’s arts scene.
Rochdale Creates hosted its first mixer event last night in the town centre, aiming to gather local creatives to network, build connections, and gather feedback about how they can give better access to the creative industries.
There has been widespread discussion about the financial challenges facing artists in the UK. Secretary of state for culture Lisa Nandy recently announced over £270million of funding for the cultural sector, as well as an independent review of Arts Council England.
The aim of Rochdale Creates is to support grassroots arts in their area.
Its culture and placemaking team said: “We are dedicated to making a positive change in Rochdale, bringing together partners across the borough, Greater Manchester and further afield to galvanise opportunities for Rochdale’s diverse communities, creatives, young people and businesses.
“Our main function is to connect and facilitate partners to come together to create high quality, meaningful projects and outcomes for our borough.”
Karen Boardman, music development manager for Rochdale development agency said they are looking to develop a “meaningful music plan for the borough”. She spoke at last night’s event and was asking for feedback from attendees. Highlighting the core challenges ahead, she stated that directing funding where it is needed most and creating connections is a priority.
The organisation has support from GMCA (Greater Manchester Combined Authority). Musicians, artists and Voltalab Sound Studio, a key partner, were in attendance. Representatives from local government and businesses were also present.
Rochdale Creates is planning further events over the course of the coming months, including exhibitions and a workshop event for local women working looking to start businesses. A conference involving charities and the council is taking place tomorrow morning at the town hall.
