Manchester Literature Festival opens with top authors among guests

Top authors and poets were among who appeared at the Manchester Literature Festival as this year’s event got off to an engaging start.

The festival, which celebrates written and spoken word, saw a number of book lovers converge on day two at the Manchester Central Library.

The event saw pop-up performances from Kevin Boniface, Laura Fish, Tawseef Khan, Nicholas Royle and other authors throughout the fair which lasted more than six hours.

Manchester-born Khan, who is the author of the non-fiction book Muslim, Actually and this summer’s novel Determination, says he enjoys writing books that impact the north.

He said: “My drive has always been to make an impact, and these festivals are helpful not only for authors to promote their work but the privilege to engage directly with the readers.”

Guests had the opportunity to engage up-close with the authors and buy books directly from regional independent presses.

The Manchester Literature Festival remains one of the north’s most exciting festivals. In 2017 it was central to the designation of Manchester as a UNESCO City of Literature.

This year’s festival ends on October 20.
