Hapless Rochdale thieves break down brick wall in failed bakery burglary

Rochdale police are hunting for thieves who tore down a brick wall to gain entry into a bakery moments after they attempted to burgle a newsagents.

The incident happened between May 16 at 4pm and May 18 at 3am where an unknown number of offenders approached the back of The Walk Newsagent on The Walk.

Once the burglars forced their way through the storeroom door, they proceeded to search the contents of the shop, but ended their robbery attempt after failing get their hands on anything of value.

Despite their botched efforts, the culprits then decided to tear down a brick wall to gain entry into Swayers Bakery – located next door.

Detective Constable David Gill said: “This offender or offenders caused substantial damage to the buildings, going as far to break down a wall on the inside of the address in order to gain entry into the bakery.”

The hapless culprits removed several bricks in the wall between the two properties, allowing them to gain access by climbing into the bakery. 

However, the thieves left with empty-handed leaving the same way they had entered the property.

DC Gill said: “Fortunately they did not get away with anything, but that does not mean that we are not treating this seriously. 

“If you were in the area over the weekend and think you may have seen someone acting suspiciously, do not hesitate to contact police.”
