Walking the beat: GMP welcome volunteers for Give and Gain day

Greater Manchester Police are celebrating the positive impact of volunteering in a special event taking place today.

Give and Gain day will see thousands of people across the globe spend a working day volunteering for local causes.

More than 90 volunteers from 29 companies will be walking the beat as special constables all across greater Manchester.

Chief Inspector Patrick McKelvey from Greater Manchester Police knows what an asset volunteers can be to his force.

He said: “Our Special Constables help to strengthen the links between police and the community provide a variety of skills and experience to frontline policing.

The special constables will be taking on a range of challenges such as licensing operations, early morning warrants, antisocial behaviour patrols, offender visits and many more.

Jordan Weakley is one such volunteer involved on the day thanks to the support from his employer, BT Openreach.

He said: “I found this to be an exciting opportunity to give something back to the community whilst challenging myself with a whole different sector.

“It’s a fantastic developing opportunity for any individual looking to do more than your average job.”

Give and Gain day is reliant on the support of employers, organisations such as Willmot Dixon, Manchester Airport and the University of Manchester have all got right behind the scheme.

Bernie Auguste head of security at Openreach can see the benefits that the programme can bring to both employers and employees.

He said: “I wholeheartedly encourage our employees to consider becoming special constables. They are not just special constables, they are special people.”
