Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has admitted a 100% record in their remaining Premier League fixtures may not be enough to topple Chelsea.
City defeated West Brom 3-0 at The Etihad on Saturday to keep pressure on the league leaders, only for Jose Mourinho’s men to beat Hull City 3-2 on Sunday.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side lie six points behind Chelsea – who have a game in hand – with eight matches left to play, and City must win them all, according to Kompany.
He said: “Can we win them all? Of course we can but we know that even if we do, it might not be enough because there are no guarantees, but we will be doing our best.
“We needed to put some things right and I think we did that. We are team who only wants to win games so this victory was very important.
“Football is very simple: if you win, you’re the best, if you lose, you’re no good. All I can say is we’ll be doing our best to win our remaining games and see where that takes us.”
A case of mistaken identity saw West Brom’s Gareth McAuley sent off after two minutes, before Wilfried Bony scored his first goal in the City blue.
Fernando then claimed City’s 1000th Premier League goal in the first half, with David Silva sealing the victory after the break.
Pellegrini was pleased Bony opened his account for the club, conceding their recent form has cried out for any player to take the initiative into their own hands.
“It is important for him because he has just arrived in our squad and he has come in from playing six games in 18 days in the African Cup of Nations,” said Pellegrini.
“That is not good at this moment of the season for the players, and that is why he is not always in the starting XI.
“It is the important thing, not just for Bony but for every player, to take chances in the way he did today.”
