Hunt for ‘beggar’ who raped and strangled woman in Manchester city centre park

The hunt is on to find a man who raped a 40-year-old woman in a violent attack in Angel Meadow Park near Manchester’s Victoria station.

At around 7pm on Friday February 27, the woman was approached by a man in the city centre who then walked with her towards Angel Meadow Park off Rochdale Road.

Once they had arrived in the park the man, who police believe was begging on Market Street earlier in the day, strangled and raped her.

Detective Sergeant Phil Steele said: “I would ask anyone who may have witnessed the incident or saw the victim and the man in or around the park between 7pm and 11.20pm to contact us.

“The victim was wearing a dark coloured North Face jacket, blue hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and trainers.”

The victim’s attacker is described as being white, in his early 30s, 5ft 2in tall, of stocky build, with short and straight black hair.

He wore a bulky black jacket, did not speak good English and said he was Spanish.

Anyone with information should phone police on 101, 0161 856 1831 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
