A good samaritan prevented a bike-riding thief from escaping with a mobile phone after it was snatched out of a woman’s hand in Manchester city centre.
The incident occured yesterday at around 5pm near Deansgate train station, when the offender approached the 26-year-old as she talked on her phone.
After the phone was swiped, the victim chased the robber to draw the attention of passer-bys – who managed to stop the offender and return the phone.
Greater Manchester Police were contacted after the incident, however the thief managed to escape from the scene before the arrival of police.
It is believed that the mugger was photographed by one of the citizens who helped return the phone.
Detective Inspector Brian Morley, said: “The dust had settled by the time we were called so all relevant parties had left the area prior to police arrival.
“We are keen identify the suspect as well as locate those involved in detaining him and returning the woman’s phone.
“Vitally, we need to trace the person who we believe took a picture of the offender.
“If you are this person or know them then please get in touch.”
Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 3221, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
