Withington MP John Leech rallies residents in bid to save Chorlton Baths

The campaign to save Chorlton Baths is being backed by Withington MP John Leech who is calling on residents to sign the petition.

Mr Leech is currently co-ordinating a ‘Community Right to Bid Application’ with hopes that he can save the swimming facilities from closure.

Since Labour council bosses announced the closure of Chorlton Baths in 2015, around 500 residents have signed a petition.

He said: “I have written to over 500 people who have signed our petition opposing the sell-off, asking them to support the bid.

“I also want them to work with me to set up a ‘Friends of Chorlton Baths’ group who could submit this application and eventually take over running the building.

“I have also spoken to officers of Chorlton Civic Society, and they are supportive of the plans. The response so far has been good.

“Labour’s proposals undermine the long term viability of the proposed joint Library and Leisure Centre because most people only use the Leisure Centre to go swimming.”

The bid needs to be supported by a local community group or 21 local residents in order to become successful, however rules state that he cannot submit the bid as an MP.

In 2013 Manchester City Council planned to move Chorlton’s swimming facilities to Hough End within their plans to save £80million from their budget.

Chorlton Lib Dem Cllr Victor Chamberlain said: “Many people will find it difficult and expensive to get to Hough End, especially those with families or on fixed incomes.

“Many people come to Chorlton to go swimming and support our shops afterwards. I’m worried the Council’s proposals could also hurt Chorlton’s independent traders as there will be significantly less footfall.”
