Oldham Athletic scored two goals in two first-half minutes as they eased to a comfortable, well-deserved 3-0 win at home to Notts County.
George Elokobi headed a third goal in five games from Mike Jones’ cross on the half-hour mark, and 83 seconds later Amari Morgan-Smith raced clear of a reeling County defence to double the Latics’ advantage.
Jonathan Forte headed in at the far-post in the second-half to add gloss to the score line, much to the delight of manager Lee Johnson whose side closed to within two points of the playoff spots.
“I think the boys worked their socks off,” he said.
“I was disappointed last week to come away not winning that game when we did well enough to win it: today we’ve created five or six very similar chances, this time we put them away.
“I was really pleased because it’s really important for us to get a win today. For us, and everybody at the club.”
The win helped Oldham climb to ninth in the table and to within just two points of sixth-placed Sheffield United.
Johnson’s side have now taken six points from the last nine available, having recovered from heavy defeats to Yeovil and MK Dons just before Christmas.
The 33-year-old is understandably pleased with this improvement and believes his side’s good performances will continue to earn them points as they push on in search of a play-off place.
“Obviously we had the two horror shows, and after we got a certain part of our game fixed it has been impressive,” he said.
“We have not won all those games and that is probably because of the fact that we have got quite a young, inexperienced group, but we have won the stats pretty much every game, but of course, the most important stat is the score line.
“However, over ten to fifteen games if you continue to win the stats, the law of averages says that you will win games.”
