Rochdale AFC are asking supporters to help choose their favourite goal of 2014, which will then be put forward as the club’s entry into the Mitre Goal of the Year competition.
The Football League have launched the search to find the best strike of the last 12 months with an eventual shortlist of ten efforts set to be shown on Sky Sports’ Soccer AM in March.
Fans will be given the chance to vote for the best five, before the overall winner will be decided by a judging panel at The Football League Awards ceremony in April.
Rochdale are using social media to ask their followers which goal they think should be chosen, with entries from the Skybet Football League, the Capital One Cup and the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy all eligible.
Dale fans are invited to tweet their suggestions to @officiallydale, or post to their official Facebook page, followed by the hashtag #RAFCMitreGOTY.
In order to help jog some memories, the club are posting highlights of all their goals from the last calendar year on their YouTube channel OfficalRochdaleAFC over the next few days.
Two stand-out efforts from Ian Henderson (1.10) and Michael Rose (1.29) against Plymouth Argyle illuminated what was a rather unspectacular goal-scoring January for Dale.
February continued this trend with Scott Hogan’s third against AFC Wimbledon (0.35) arguably the pick of the bunch.
With some of Rochdale’s efforts at the beginning of 2014 admittedly less spectacular than others, here are some previous award winners straight out of the top drawer to whet your appetite.
Coventry City’s Franck Moussa triumphed in last year’s competition with an outrageous chip over Leyton Orient goalkeeper Jamie Jones.
2012 saw Simon Cox of Nottingham Forest take home the prize for his sublime finish against Birmingham City.
Cardiff City’s Peter Whittingham picked up the award a year previously for this screamer against Barnsley.
