Manchester United shot-stopper David De Gea is the best goalkeeper in the world, according to new signing Victor Valdes.
Former Barcelona ‘keeper Valdes joined United this week having trained with Louis van Gaal’s side since October after leaving the Catalan giants in June last year.
And, in his first interview since officially becoming a Red Devil, Valdes has labelled fellow Spaniard – and current Old Trafford number one De Gea – as the best in the game.
“I think now, in the moment, he is the best goalkeeper in the world because his performance every day and in every game shows everybody that his level is very high,” he told MUTV.
“He has had a great year and it is very nice. Now I think he is the best goalkeeper in the world.”
Valdes claimed six La Liga titles during his Barcelona days, as well as two Copa del Rey crowns, six Spanish Supercups and three Champions League trophies.
He was handed his debut at the Catalan giants by Van Gaal back in 2002, and went on to register over 500 appearances during his 12-year stint at the Camp Nou.
Valdes admitted that he will be forever thankful to the Dutchman for giving him the chance.
“For me it is a pleasure to play under Louis van Gaal and it is very important to show him good things for my career, because he is my most important coach,” he added.
“When you are a young player and you have the first option, or the first chance, to play in the first-team of Barca… and the manager gave me that option when I was 20 years old.
“This is the most important person in your career, I think. Now we are together again and he brings me another chance in my life.
“To play at Old Trafford, it is a dream come true for me. After the Camp Nou, I think it is the most important stadium in the world.
“The Theatre of Dreams is very important for the football players and the history of football. Now I am a player of Man United and it will be a very emotional day for me.”
