A 26-year-old man who was killed in Manchester city centre had been previously jailed in connection with a murder nearly three years to the day he died on Sunday.
Clarence ‘Clay’ Edwards was knifed on Charles Street at around 3.25am in the early hours of Sunday morning.
A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following a fatal stabbing attack.
Paramedics were called to the scene to treat the father-of-one who sadly died in hospital soon afterwards from his stab wounds.
Detective Superintendent Joanne Rawlinson said: “A young man has sadly died and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his relatives and friends.
“I cannot begin to imagine what they are going through and specially trained officers are offering them whatever support we can.
“We are in the very early stages of the investigation and we have a team of experienced detectives working to establish the circumstances leading up to his death.”
Mr Edwards was one of 12 men jailed in connection with death of John Lee Barrett in 2011. The father-of two was stabbed in Sinclair’s Bar in Rochdale in 2011 – the identity of his killer still remains unknown.
According to police, a group of bystanders were found congregating at the scene when units arrived.
Witnesses who may hold vital information are being urged to contact Greater Manchester Police.
DS Rawlinson said: “I would urge any witnesses to this tragic incident to come forward and speak to us.
“Although one man has been arrested in connection with the murder, we still need to hear from anyone who was around the Charles Street area in the early hours of this morning or has any information which may assist us with our investigation.
“We will have an increased police presence in the area as we continue our investigation and to reassure local residents, so if you have any concerns or information you wish to provide please come and speak to us.”
