Wigan Athletic’s Andrew Taylor has admitted that he is hurt and that the team’s pride is at stake after yet another loss at the weekend.
Malky Mackay’s side lost 2-1 at Hillsborough where Sheffield Wednesday ended their 11-game winless streak while Wigan are now without a victory since the end of October.
Defender Taylor has offered his complete honesty about the Latics awful form and has admitted that they must work hard to dig themselves out of a very disappointing situation.
He said: “We’re hurt, very disappointed, our professional pride is at stake.
“None of us want to be in a relegation fight but, at the end of the day, that’s where we are at the moment and we’ve got to understand that.
“It was really poor from us, once we went 1-0 up, with the experience we’ve got, we should know how to manage the game.
“Now it’s about working hard and digging ourselves out of the situation we’re in.”
However, Taylor has worked under manager Mackay before at Watford and Cardiff and still feels that, given a little more time, the Scotsman will lead the team to safety.
It was Latics’ first loss under their new boss and the 42-year-old has also admitted how ashamed he was of the defeat.
He said: “I’m really disappointed for them after we came up here and played the way we did.
“We’ve got to be better at making sure we actually keep the lead; that’s about game management and that’s something that we’ll work on in the weeks going forward because we’d been comfortable up to that point.”
Wigan next welcome Norwich City to the DW Stadium, another side who have not won since the end of October, so it is another opportunity for Mackay’s men to put an end to their barren run.
“To give such a sloppy first goal away was disappointing, we’ve got three men running to the ball and that’s about communication which is something else we’ll work on,” added Mackay.
“We’ll be working hard, I think the fans have seen that and they’ve seen the chances we created up at the end they were at, we’ll keep trying to get these wins back on the board again.”
