Man Utd players have gotta fight for their right to play, warns Van Gaal

Louis van Gaal has said everyone at Manchester United will have to fight to make his starting 11 as he continues to search for balance ahead of Saturday’s home game with Hull City.

The returns of Michael Carrick and the much-maligned Marouane Fellaini have gone some way to adding steel to a midfield that was all but absent in the opening weeks of the season.

However Van Gaal is not adverse to making more changes as his talented squad look to record three straight league wins for the first time this season.

“Every player has to fight for his position and I shall always pick the best of the players,” said the 62-year-old.

“It has to be a suitable mix. We have to improve our playing style in order to beat opponents more easily.

“However, we are still fourth so I am still happy but we have to be at least fourth at the end of the season, not now.”

The manager’s words may serve as a warning for Netherlands captain Robin van Persie who has suffered a terrible run of recent form – he completed just two passes against former club Arsenal last week.

Van Persie has already been overlooked for captaincy by Van Gaal, who preferred England striker Wayne Rooney to his fellow countryman.

Now the manager has confirmed that loan striker Radamel Falcao could return this weekend, Van Persie could face a battle to stay in the team.

Though the Colombian is yet to show his best form at United he is regarded as one of the most lethal strikers in world football.

Van Gaal, who has challenged his side to add a ruthless streak, also spoke of the leadership skills of United legend Steve Bruce who brings his Hull side to Old Trafford on Saturday.

“I saw him playing for United. He was very firm I think.  He was also a leader,” added Van Gaal.

“Most players who are leader become managers, and he is one.”
