Eidur be happy to have him at Bolton: Lennon hopes for first dibs on Gudjohnsen return

Neil Lennon hopes Bolton Wanderers will be given an opportunity to sign Eidur Gudjohnsen ahead of any other club if the Icelander chooses to return to football.

Gudjohnsen has been training with Wanderers for the best part of November since leaving Club Brugge in the summer and there have been plenty of hints that he could rejoin his former side.

The 36-year-old scored 27 goals in 77 games for the Trotters between 1998 and 2000 before moving on to successful spells with Chelsea and Barcelona.

“Eidur has done well,” said Lennon. “He’s been impressive on the training pitch and also did well in a behind-closed-doors fixture.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if other teams were interested, although I don’t want to have to face that scenario.

“We’ve been good to Eidur, we’ve looked after him and given him the opportunity to get himself fit and train with the players.

“There has to be a bit of give and take here so if there is any other interest we expect to get first crack.

“He seems to feel himself that he wants another game before he makes a decision but we’ll be talking to him about where we go.

“We feel he’s still got a bit to offer, everything he’s been asked to do he’s done well. It’s not done and dusted by any means but we’ll see where we go from here.”

While discussions are ongoing about signing Iceland’s all-time record goalscorer, Wanderers have let three fringe players leave for League One on loan until January.

Substitute goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, who only joined the Trotters in September, and youngster Tom Youngs have joined Oldham Athletic, while Tom Eaves has switched to Yeovil Town.
