A violent thug repeatedly slammed a woman’s head into a wall while trying to snatch her handbag in an attempted robbery in Leigh.
The 56-year-old woman was attacked while walking along Clifton Street at about 10.30am on November 12.
The victim was walking towards Preistners Way when she was confronted by the offender, who tried to snatch the handbag from her grasp while punching her in the face and kicking her in the chest.
The woman cried for help, causing a member of the public to run to her aid, which caused the attacker to panic and let go of the bag, before running off out of sight towards the Marsh playing field empty handed.
Detective Constable Darren Reid said: “This woman was subjected to a sustained and violent attempt by the offender who was trying to steal her handbag.
“During the ensuing struggle, she was repeatedly slammed into the side of a wall and subjected to a barrage of blows by this desperate criminal.
“By any stretch of the imagination this man’s actions were brutal and violent and he needs to be caught.”
He added: “Despite the ordeal she suffered, this woman has been brave enough to work with our forensic imaging specialists to produce an accurate picture of the man who attacked her and I would ask that people look carefully at the image.”
Police have now released an e-fit of the suspect and are appealing to anyone who recognises him to come forward.
He is described as being white, in his early 20s, of a slim build and about 5ft 8in tall. He was wearing a black baseball cap and a white and black jacket with a blue jumper.
Detective Constable Darren Reid said: “If you think you recognise this man or perhaps see him hanging around the area then please call us immediately.”
