There’s no place like home: Nani savours Man Utd return in Portugal victory

United’s Portuguese winger Nani still considers Old Trafford as home after his return for Portugal’s 1-0 victory over Argentina on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old is currently on loan at Sporting Lisbon after struggling to make an impact with Manchester United in recent seasons.

The star has shown signs of returning to his best form this season and was ecstatic to play at his home ground for the first time this season.

“It’s a great feeling and so exciting to come here and enjoy this game, especially when I know it is my home,” he told MUTV.

“It’s always a pleasure to come to Old Trafford and play a game of football.

“Most of the supporters are United supporters so I was very happy to be here.”

Nani had made just 23 league appearances for United since the beginning of the title-winning 2012/13 campaign but hopes his loan move will help him come back stronger.

“I am feeling good. Like I said in the beginning, I wanted to go to play more to get at my best and things are going well,” added the winger after making his 83rd international performance.

“I’m working hard to be at my best. I just want to continue to work very hard and play well.”

His Sporting Lisbon side have suffered an indifferent start to their league campaign where they lie eighth after ten games but still have a good chance of progressing in the Champions League.

The side are one point off second place Schalke 04 in Group G and Nani has scored three goals in four games so far.

Nani’s parent club United are not in the competition this year for the first time in two decades but despite this the Portugal winger is confident the side can improve on their current performances.

“I continue to follow Manchester United every day. The team are not doing very well [in the table] but I am very confident the future will be better,” he added.

Nani was involved in a tackle with United’s record signing Angel Di Maria which saw the Argentine require treatment on Tuesday night.

However the Portuguese winger, as well as United fans everywhere, will be pleased that the winger was able to carry on and didn’t suffer a long-term injury.

Di Maria should line up with his Old Trafford teammates against Arsenal on Saturday.
