Michael Carrick has insisted that Manchester United are heading in the right direction in order to bring success back to Old Trafford.
The England midfielder made his first appearance of 2014/15 in United’s derby loss to noisy neighbours Manchester City on Sunday, having only just returned from a lengthy spell on the side-lines.
Louis van Gaal’s men ended up losing 1-0, having to play the majority of the game with ten men after Chris Smalling was sent off, but Carrick is confident that the 20-times league champions will bounce back.
“There are signs that we certainly believe we are still going to have a good year and a good season,” he told the club’s official site.
“It’s just little things that aren’t going for us and we are making little errors, but overall the feeling is that we are still building to be successful and we will be. It’s just frustrating at the minute.
“It’s not been a great start but I think the feeling is better than that really. There is a real feeling that we can still do something special.”
At this stage last year, much maligned former boss David Moyes had two more wins and two fewer losses under his belt at United than Van Gaal currently does.
Despite only being a league position higher after ten games last term, United had amassed 17 points as opposed to their 13 gathered in Van Gaal’s tenure so far.
And Carrick conceded that the squad know that they must improve, but was adamant that the dressing room is confident that they will do so.
“When we look at the points total, we are bitterly disappointed with the amount that we have got,” he added.
“It’s nowhere near good enough for where we want to be but I think you get a feeling when you are in the squad like I have been over the years.
“We believe we are going in the right direction and we are not far off being where we want to be.”
