A Manchester hospital became the first to provide 24/7 consultant services on their maternity unit tomorrow.
With more than 8,642 babies born at Saint Mary’s Hospital last year, the hospital now ranks as the largest single-site maternity unit in the UK.
As part of the ‘Making it Better’ programme, the maternity services at the hospital have made changes to offer essential labour consultancy to pregnant mothers and meet the needs of the Mancunian community.
Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which oversees the day-to-day running of Manchester’s Saint Mary’s Hospital, has pledged to adequately meet the needs of women requiring more complex obstetric care and to improve patient safety.
Clinical Director for Obstetrics at Saint Mary’s, Sarah Vause, said: “We now have more consultants assigned to our antenatal clinics and are already seeing improvements in the total package of care we offer.
“This means that women who have complicated pregnancies or labours, will have the reassurance that there will always be a specialist consultant obstetrician on our maternity unit at any time of the day, every day of the week.”
Saint Mary’s Hospital was founded in 1790 and offers medical services for women, babies and children.
With more than 1,000 staff, including doctors, nurses, midwives, scientists, clinical and support staff, St. Mary’s Hospital has evolved into one of the largest maternity hospitals in the United Kingdom.
