Sergio Aguero became Manchester City’s record Premier League goalscorer on Saturday and has vowed his side will keep pushing leaders Chelsea.
Aguero scored four in City’s 4-1 win over Tottenham at the Etihad to overtake compatriot Carlos Tevez, moving his tally to 61 in just 95 league appearances.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino compared Aguero to Mozart on Friday and the Argentine certainly hit all the right notes the following day for City.
“I’m very happy to be part of the history of this club and I hope I can continue scoring goals,” he told City’s website.
“The most important thing is that City can win games with my goals.
“Chelsea are in good form at the moment but I think that the Premier League is very difficult so I guess they’re going to drop some points.”
Aguero was his usual composed self in front of goal but arguably could have had more after missing a first-half penalty.
“If I didn’t miss the penalty I think it could have been easier but those things happen. Anyway, we killed the game in the second half.”
Having taken the lead after 13 minutes, Spurs replied through Christian Eriksen two minutes later before Aguero scored his first penalty to take City ahead at the break.
Roberto Soldado had the chance to level from the spot, but a superb save from Joe Hart ensured City stayed in front.
Aguero then wrapped things up for City with the game’s fourth penalty – a joint record in the league – before he finished expertly from a tight angle in the 75th minute.
He is the deadliest striker in Premier League history with regards to goals per minute, above legends such as Thierry Henry and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
With a goal every 108 minutes, the 26-year-old is the club’s prize asset and manager Manuel Pellegrini was left singing his striker’s praises.
“I am not just saying this because he scored four goals today, but I think Kun is one of the best three or four strikers in the world,” said the Chilean.
“Last year he had injuries but now this season he is working very well – he didn’t start the first game so he could be 100% fit.
“He won’t score four every game but he will demonstrate why everyone says he is one of the best players in the world.”
And while Aguero was on song up front, City stopper Hart received praise from his manager for producing a string of vital saves.
“Joe is the no.1 keeper in England. He made important saves today, especially the penalty,” Pellegrini added.
“He also made a good save in the first five or six minutes which was important so we did not start with conceding a goal.”
City remain in second place in the Premier League, five points behind unbeaten Chelsea who saw off Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
