An elderly woman was stabbed in the neck during a ‘horrific’ attack at her home in Chorlton yesterday.
UPDATE: Greater Manchetser Police say they are no longer treating the incident as as suspicious and say elderly woman may have inflicted injury on herself.
Police were called around 3.50pm following reports that a 76-year-old woman had been assaulted by a man in the Manley Road area.
The woman was taken to hospital and remains in critical condition.
It is unknown whether anything was stolen during the attack, or whether the man fled the area on foot or in a vehicle.
Detective Inspector Rebecca Duggan of Greater Manchester Police said: “We are in the very early stages of our investigation and are currently examining the circumstances that led up to this horrific attack.
“From what we have been told the woman was stabbed in her own home by a man. We do not if anything has been stolen, nor do we know whether he fled the area on foot or in a car.”
Police are now appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have information relevant to the incident to come forward.
“I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed a man leaving the Manley Road area this afternoon and thinks they saw something relevant to this investigation to call us,” Det Insp Duggan said.
“To offer reassurance to the community, we will be increasing police patrols in the area and would ask anyone who has concerns to speak to their local officer.”
Anyone with information should phone police on 101 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800555111.
