David Flitcroft was delighted with Bury’s first half display as they saw off fellow League Two high flyers Morecambe to progress in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.
Two first half goals from Danny Nardiello and a late Ryan Lowe strike were enough to see the Shakers seal a 3-1 win at the JD Stadium.
Flitcroft was purring with his charges intensity in the first 45 and said they could easily have had more than their two goals.
“The first half was a real show of strength, style, spirit – we pressed the ball unbelievably – it was as good a show as I’ve seen,” he said.
“We won’t be taking this competition lightly – we’ve got a small squad but it’s packed full of quality.”
“The lads that have been left out have wanted the team to keep winning and that’s important to me – there are no selfish players in the squad.”
The Bolton born boss is keen to test himself and his team against sides in League One and above – with the draw taking place this Saturday morning.
After his nomination for League Two’s September Manager of the Month award Flitcroft is right to be full of confidence.
After collecting 10 points from five games, squad rotation has been limited as Flitcroft does not want to change a winning formula.
Chris Sedgwick has been a victim of this and played for only the second time this season on Tuesday night.
“The team is doing well and winning so you can’t be frustrated – you need to be there when you’re called upon,” he said.
“It keeps everyone on their toes – the lads who are playing know that if they’re not at it, there is someone to take their place and it can only be healthy.”
“We try and pass on our experience, make sure the lads know what jobs they’re doing,” he added when describing his role as a senior squad member.
