Art lovers across the city are invited to spend the weekend immersed in a huge range of work at the Buy Art Fair and The Manchester Contemporary.
This year’s the Old Granada Studio hosts the event, opening their doors for people to come along, view, enjoy or even buy and take home pieces from a variety of over 500 British and European artists.
At last night’s event preview, MM caught up with Liam Whitehead, Marketing Executive at The Manchester Contemporary, to discuss the ‘thrill’ and success of the event.
He said upscaling the event to the grand spaces of the ‘iconic’ Old Granada Studios was a ‘no-brainer.
The lofty halls of the former television studios make the perfect setting for the vast exhibition and no space is left unused.
Each room presents an array of various galleries, each with contrasting offerings to the one before.
Amongst the paintings, sculptures and drawings lay an intriguing installation from Manchester based artist, Darren Adcock, whose fine line ink imagery is brought to life by the use of UV paint and a handheld torch.
The audience participation element attracted a crowd of curious participants, revealing ghostly inscriptions beyond the reach of the naked eye.
In the same room, which hosts a selection of works by UK based artists, is a piece called Maelstrom, by another Mancunian Tom Bevan.
The sculpture is a hand-bound book of tweets all taken from the same minute on August 5 2013.
Tom’s thought-provoking display of artistry was inspired by the way society uses social media.
The fair spans works from budding artists to more established names and will come to a close this Sunday September 28.
Liam said: “The Buy Art Fair and The Manchester Contemporary is great for local artists, as well as those who have come from further afield.
“Manchester has experienced a creative-swell in recent years, and this is a great opportunity to celebrate that.”
All proceeds made from fundraising activities at Buy Art Fair and The Manchester Contemporary will go towards the construction of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre in Withington.
