‘Start how we finish’: Rosler’s message to misfiring Wigan after 2-1 Ipswich home loss

Uwe Rosler says Wigan need stamina over 90 minutes to have a chance of Premier League promotion after last night’s 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town.

Luke Hyam and Conor Sammon scored for Ipswich before Martyn Waghorn pulled one back late in the second half for the Latics.

The final 20 minutes were heavily dominated by Wigan but after being outclassed in the first half by Mick McCarthy’s men, their efforts were not enough to clinch a point.

“We have to start games in the same manner we ended this one,” said former German international Rosler.

“We had a decent start, but we couldn’t get any momentum up because we couldn’t stay on the ball.

“We couldn’t compete today in periods of the first half, we weren’t good enough in standing up to Ipswich.

“The first goal we were ball watching, we had enough defenders in the box to clear it but we lost concentration.

“The second goal was typical again, the ball bouncing around and we couldn’t get it away quick enough, they punished us at the vital moments.”

Wigan seemed unable to apply any consistent fluency and so a threatening Ipswich side took advantage and sent themselves up to seventh place with Rosler’s team down in 17th.
