An already tough week for Manchester City is about to intensify as they prepare to face Chelsea in a crucial Premier League clash today.
Manuel Pellegrini’s men have endured difficult tests against Arsenal and Bayern Munich in the space of just four days and now face another tough encounter against rivals Chelsea on Sunday.
Both sides have played each other well over 100 times, and despite Chelsea boasting the better head-to-head record, City have still won an honorable 47 times.
Here at MM, we’ve delved into the archives to choose City’s top five triumphs over the London club.
5. 2012/13 Chelsea 2 Manchester City 3
Manchester City lifted the first piece of silverware of the 2012/13 season after overcoming Chelsea in the Community Shield.
City fell behind just moments before half-time but three goals in the space of 12minutes in the second-half from Yaya Toure, Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri ensured the Premier League champions claimed victory in the season’s traditional curtain-raiser.
4. 2011/12 Manchester City 2 Chelsea 1
Manchester City overturned a 1-0 deficit to triumph to a 2-1 victory and keep their titles hopes alive.
Samir Nasri scored the winner after Carlos Tevez, who was brought on as a sub by Roberto Mancini in the second-half, played a clever pass into the Frenchman who finished neatly beyond Petr Cech.
The three points proved vital as City went on to pip rivals Manchester United to the league title on a memorable last day of the season on goal difference.
3. 2012/13 Manchester City 2 Chelsea 1
Goals from Samir Nasri and Sergio Aguero proved enough to inflict defeat on Chelsea and seal a passage through to the F.A Cup final.
Roberto Mancini’s men were forced to battle hard near the end, though, as Fernando Torres’s late strike set up a nervy finish.
However, City remained solid and set up a tie with Wigan Athletic, which ended in severe disappointment for the blue side of Manchester.
2. 1977/78 Manchester City 6 Chelsea 2
Dennis Tueart scored a hat-trick in helping Manchester City record their biggest ever win over Chelsea.
The City forward, who netted a total 109 goals in his two spells at the club, proved influential on a day when Peter Barnes and Mick Channon also got on the score-sheet.
The Citizens finished fourth that year, just 12 points off league champions Nottingham Forrest.
1. 2009/10 Chelsea 2 Manchester City 4
Manchester City ran riot in the second-half to inflict a first home defeat of the season on Chelsea.
A goal from Carlos Tevez on the stroke of half time cancelled out Frank Lampard’s opening strike and set the tone for a rampant second period for City.
Craig Bellamy netted on 51 minutes before Tevez added his second.
Then with just three minutes remaining, Bellamy scored City’s fourth and condemned the league leaders to a damming defeat.
It was a remarkable result and one that to this day remains their joint biggest ever win at Stamford Bridge.
