Greater Manchester men and families affected by prostate cancer offered free counselling

Free counselling is being offered to Greater Manchester men and their families affected by prostate cancer thanks to a team up between Relate and Prostate Cancer UK.

Incontinence, lack of libido, depression and anxiety are just some of the potential side effects that men face when treating the disease.

And while it can be often successfully treated if caught early enough, the new scheme will offer a dedicated Relate counsellor for each individual to suit their specific needs and help them through the emotional battle.

Michelle Hill, Chief Executive of Relate Greater Manchester South, said: “Everyone’s need is different and the funding from Prostate Cancer UK allows us to provide free access to the relationship counselling services or sex therapy which can play a crucial role in the emotional recovery from Prostate Cancer which is just as important as the physical recovery.”

Forty thousand are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year making it the most common cancer for men.

It will be funded by the Movember Foundation and available at Relate centres in Manchester and Stockport.

Louise Jackson-Sanders, Prostate Cancer UK Community Support Service Manager, said: “Many men tell us that they receive little or no support to help them deal with these concerns.

“We’re delighted that – with support from the Movember Foundation – Relate’s expert counsellors will now be on hand in Greater Manchester to support men and their loved ones struggling to come to terms with the disease and its side effects.”

To book an appointment in any of the local centres contact Relate Greater Manchester South on 0300 003 2331 or email [email protected].
