Oldham fell like dominoes: ‘Worst loser’ Lee Johnson says Latics can cause problems with more fight

Playing a much better opponent will always be demoralising, though David still slayed Goliath and with that attitude Oldham Athletic can prosper this season in League One says Lee Johnson.

Oldham were dispatched 3-0 in the Capital One Cup by Championship Middlesbrough on Tuesday and can now turn their attention to the league.

Improving on their mediocre 15th place finish last season and adding to their unbeaten streak can continue on Saturday against a side-tracked Leyton Orient says Johnson.

“It’s an exciting time for their club and they are chucking a lot of financial clout behind their team so maybe this is a good time to catch them,” he told the club’s website.

“We drew with them twice last year and maybe we should have got more from those games but they are a good side and we believe we can cause problems in this division.

“I believe that we are on a good run in this league and if we can get us a win on Saturday, we can go 12 unbeaten. In our division we know we are capable and strong and we have to go into Saturday’s game full of confidence.”

Oldham posed very little threat to 2006 Uefa Cup runners-up Boro however, a marker of the gulf in class between Johnson’s aspiring troops and the 54 teams currently above them in English professional football.

“You know me, I’m the world’s worst loser,” said Johnson.

“A few of our players went down like dominos mentally,” he added of Tuesday’s loss.

“But that’s what happens when you play teams at a higher level because they do that to you.”
