Vandals have defaced Stockport’s war memorial for the SECOND time just days after First World War centenary commemorations.
The Grade II listed bus shelter, which forms part of Stockport’s War Memorial complex, has been ‘tagged’ two separate times in recent weeks.
The first occurred just hours after the shelter was cleaned and doused with an anti-graffiti coating ready for the Lights Out commemoration event to mark the 100th anniversary of WWI.
The graffiti was removed from the bus shelter in time for the event but now the memorial has been targeted again.
Councillor Patrick McAuley, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, said: “I hope the person(s) responsible for these acts of vandalism feel thoroughly ashamed of themselves.
“They have insulted the memories of over 3,000 men and women killed since 1914 commemorated within the Memorial.”
Members of the public are being urged to come forward with any information regarding the senseless act of puerile vandalism.
Councillor McAuley added: “By spraying paint onto the vintage stonework they are causing serious damage.
“In the spirit of those who fought for the free society that the perpetrators appear to be taking for granted, I’d like to give those responsible the opportunity to own up to what they have done and help us put this right.”
