Who are ISIS? MM’s factfile on the rebel group looking to establish Islamic state

The night-time escape of twin girls from their home in Chorlton to the war-torn state Syria, has left their relatives in shock and disbelief.

Salma and Zahra Halane, A-grade GCSE students, made an unprecedented move to Syria, allegedly in support of the jihadist organisation Isis.

Such bold actions by such young females have left many Mancunians stunned.

So who are the newest group jostling for power and making major moves in the Middle East?

What is Isis?

Isis is an abbreviation for the Islamic state for Iraq and Syria.  It is an extremist militant organisation whose goal is to create a unified Islamic state.

They believe the Islamic holy book the Qur’an, or religious recitations, encourages all Muslims to unite and fight against those who deny Muslims basic liberties.

Who leads Isis?

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is the current leader of ISIS.  He holds a doctoral degree, and has led the organization since 2010.

The reclusive 42-year-old, who was born in Iraq, claims to be a direct descendent of the prophet Mohammed and is known to implore ruthless tactics to those who oppose him.

Al-Baghdadi made a rare appearance in occupied Iraqi city Mosul last week with a video sermon imploring Muslims to ‘obey him’.

How did Isis come about?

The inception of Isis came about after they seized the power vacuum left in the wake of the American troops withdrew from Iraq, the ongoing Syrian war and the continuing divisions between various Islamic groups.

Isis has experienced exponential growth within a short time period and, like many groups, deeply opposed the US’ occupation of Islamic states.  Leader al-Baghdadi, has played a key role in Isis’s growing success.

How is Isis funded?

Isis is funded through the possessions it obtains through victory and is estimated to be worth more than £1 billion.

Isis’ implementation of ‘search and destroy’ tactics have allowed for the seizure of gold, money and valuable territory, which consequently adds to their wealth.

What principles does Isis adhere to?

Isis adheres to a strict code of law that forbids women from civic duties and compels all Muslims to pledge full allegiance to their cause.

In comparison to other variants on Islamic rule, Isis is considered the strictest with unwavering beliefs.

Why does Isis have a growing appeal?

Isis encourages individuals around the world to join ranks with them as they seek to create a united Islamic state.

Their appeal has been a major contributor to their growing success.
