Louis van Gaal’s fearsome reputation is not only scaring current players, one of Manchester United’s 1968 European Cup winners is afraid of the Dutchman too.
David Sadler, who also helped United to league titles in 1965 and 1967 during one of the club’s most successful decades, said he likes what he sees in Van Gaal but is quietly pleased he won’t be on the receiving end of any changing room tirades.
“I’ve never worked under him but, by all accounts, he’s a tough guy. He looks a tough guy and I’m not going to pick a fight with him!” said Sadler, 68.
“Stuff has been seeping out with people talking about him and, if half of those things are true, it seems we’ve got a very good manager.”
Sadler said the fact Ryan Giggs was staying on to learn from Van Gaal and maintain a sense of stability at the club was a sure sign United would get back on the winning path after a season of discontent in 2013/14.
“He (Giggs)was never going to be appointed manager and, if you talk to him, I’m sure he will say that – but he might be manager one day,” said Sadler.
“I’m absolutely delighted he’s stayed. I think it’s good for the club and for Van Gaal, who is bound to bring a number of people in, but having Ryan there is terrific.
“It will be a fantastic new season and we’re certainly all looking forward to it.”
