While the goals of Lionel Messi have dragged a largely uninspiring Argentina through to the semi-finals of the World Cup, teammate and Manchester City fullback Pablo Zabaleta says they couldn’t have done it without their fans.
The famous sky blue and white kit has adorned various grounds in neighbouring Brazil as Argentina hope to echo their World Cup victories of 1978, at home, and 1986 in Mexico.
A semi-final against 2010 runners-up Netherlands awaits on Wednesday before a potential final against either Brazil or Germany, a match Zabaleta is determined to get to.
“This is what Argentinian supporters are all about. They make you feel very proud so this group is trying to give them a massive triumph. This is massive for us,” said the City man.
“We can feel when we go out on the field that there are so many Argentinian fans there cheering us on, singing. It’s great,” he added.
Zabaleta will get a first look at new Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal in Wednesday’s clash, with the Dutchman praising his squad as the supremely talented Holland look to win a first World Cup crown.
”In terms of team spirit and togetherness, this is the best group I’ve worked with,” said the 62-year-old.
“If a player says something, it hits home more than if I do,” he added, heaping praise on United striker Robin van Persie and former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt.
“Robin and Dirk gave great speeches. That was fantastic but I’ve felt since we got together and became a unit at the training camp in Portugal.
“So I don’t need to check on them, at all. They know exactly when they have to take their responsibilities. It’s not about me or the staff bu taking responsibility.”
