Clueless about 90’s fashion? Manchester high street boasts wealth of plaid, platforms and dungarees

Clueless, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Saved by the Bell stormed into the public conscious in the 1990s bringing with them hilarious jokes and iconic fashion statements.

Some breathed a sigh of relief as the grunge hangover of plaid, platforms and dungarees gave way to a more sophisticated noughties look.

But if you take a look at what the high street has to offer today you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d travelled back 20 years.

All the Cs – cropped sweatshirts, chokers, cute co-ordinates and chunky platforms, the footwear of choice for the Spice Girls, have been edging back into favour.

The high street is clearly signalling that the 90s are back. And we’ll tell you what we want, what we really, really want – we want everything.

And we’re not alone. Can’t Be Tamed star Miley Cyrus often sports high-necked crop tops paired with high-waisted jeans when she struts her stuff on stage.

She’s even been spotted showing off the odd scrunchie, a trademark of notorious 90’s fashionista Gwen Stefani.

If you’re looking to incorporate a hint of 90’s style into your 2014 wardrobe we’ve narrowed down the best picks of what the high street has to offer.

For the bargain hunters among us Primark is always a great point of call.

These crosshatched wool coordinates are available in navy or in grey.  The jumper (1) will set you back a mere £12, while the matching skirt (2) will cost you £10.

Primark has also joined the legion of high street stores championing jelly shoes which were originally enjoyed as the ultimate beach shoe but are back with a bang and are now clomping down a pavement near you.

For something to jazz up a day-to-day outfit, these gold sparkly jelly shoes (3) are also £10.

Meanwhile these chequered trousers (4) look like they walked straight off the set of Friends and into your wardrobe for just £12.

T-shirts and crop tops were among the must-haves for most 90’s fashion followers, and for a new take on both check out this lace cropped tee (5) – a steal at £4 – and this collared t-shirt dress (6) for £10.

It’s not just Primark revelling in the trend of crop tops – H&M is also giving customers the chance to embrace this trend.

This turtleneck (1) is a pinch above Primark at £19.99, but you can also add a floral pattern to your wardrobe for just £6.99 with yet another on-trend cropped tee (6).

If you’re after a more complete look this striped two-in-one t-shirt dress (4) is yours for £24.99.

This jumper is not only a nod to the oversized sweatshirt craze but also to the 90’s favourite way to flash flesh.

A bra or croptop beneath fishnet or transparent inserts is a daring look that’s very Madonna.

This summery jumper (5) at £12.99 could be a modern, slightly more snuggly take on that style perfect for when the sun goes down.

But if we’re thinking Madonna or Posh Spice in her pre-designer heyday where would we be without leather?

This skirt (2) and jacket (3) will set you back £14.99 and £29.99 respectively.

If you really want authentic upscale 90s – and are willing to pay for the higher end of high street – Urban Outfitters is the place to shop.

At £55 this culottes playsuit (1) is perfect for summer months, as is this beautiful floral maxi skirt with lace inserts (6) for £48.

Urban Outfitters are also pioneering the denim look, with these dungarees (2) at £48 and high-wasted jeans (5) at £55.

Gwen Stefani would be in heaven checking out these jars of scrunchies (4) at £6 a piece.

And Urban Outfitters are also jumping on the jelly bandwagon, with these JuJu jelly shoes coming in at £12.

Finally, for the truly dedicated throwback fashionista, American Apparel is currently showcasing a wealth of the pre-Millennium look.

These cute cropped tees (1) are on sale at £26, with a turtleneck equivalent (2) for those willing to bare shoulders at £23.

With high-waisted denim once again all the rage these skirts are bang on trend at £48.

Meanwhile these shorts (5) for £54 might well take you back to the days of Fresh Prince and Saved by the Bell.

This glittery princess dress (3) at £52 isn’t one for the shy and retiring, and neither is this gorgeous pair of sunflower dungarees (6) at a whopping but-probably-worth-it is £95.
