Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany believes his Belgium battlers have what it takes to lift the World Cup.
Kompany will be battling his Argentinian Manchester City team mates Sergio Aguero, Martin Demichelis and Pablo Zabaleta to in a mouth-watering quarter-final clash on Saturday.
But it is his current squad mates in Brazil who are giving the Red Devils skipper cause to eye the top prize.
“We now hope that we can go through until 13th July. It will be difficult but we have the players to do it,” said Kompany.
“If everyone is fully fit, it can be a very special game against Argentina.”
With the likes of Kompany, Axel Witsel and Eden Hazard in their ranks, and a host of young guns including Thibaut Courtois, Eden Hazard and Adnan Januzaj, Belgium are widely thought to have the best 23 at the tournament.
And while they have stuttered from time-to-time, the pre-tournament dark horses have shown character and grit to overcome all challengers so far with a 100% win record.
Belgium managed to take victory from the USA by winning 2-1 in extra time with Kompany impressing as he dragged his tired team mates through to their first quarter-final since 1986.
Kompany is confident in facing the challenge of the Argentinians after his side fired in a World Cup record 37 shots at the USA goal, testing American goalkeeper Tim Howard to the limit.
The City defender said: “I am unbelievably tired but also unbelievably proud of what the boys have achieved.
“We gave it our all and we achieved it together as one strong group.”
With Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina also going to extra-time against Nigeria and also winning all their games, one team will see their winning streak ended at the weekend.
And Kompany insists more of the same will be enough to top the Argentinians – who won 2-0 when the two met in 1986.
“It is also positive that we had so many chances against the US. If that repeats itself against Argentina, I think we will score more.”
