A man’s body has been found in an area of shrub land close to Pennington Flash in Leigh.
The identity of the man is yet to be confirmed, but police are investigating the possibility that he could be Robert Paxon.
Officers and Bolton Mountain Rescue Team volunteers have been searching for 33-year-old Paxon, who was last seen more than more than a week ago on Tuesday June 24 close to Leigh Sports Village.
The remains, which are yet to be identified, were found at around 3pm on Wednesday afternoon in a secluded spot just behind Pennington golf course.
A police spokesperson said that it is believed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
On Tuesday, a huge hunt was launched involving the police’s missing person search managers, divisional officers, tactical aid unit teams, PCSOs and officers from GMP’s mounted division.
Specialist search dogs from Merseyside Police as well as an underwater unit were also brought in to help search the bodies of water around the area.
A helicopter from the National Police Air Service, based at City Airport Manchester, also joined in the search operation.
