A violent husband who stabbed his wife to death in their Levenshulme home in a jealous rage over her wanting to start a new life has been sentenced to life in prison.
Aftab Alam, 53, of Mayford Road, Levenshulme, was today was sentenced today at Manchester Crown Court to a minimum of 12 years after pleading guilty to the murder of mother-of-four Aisha Alam.
On the morning of November 22, 2013, Alam launched an unprovoked attack on his wife, stabbing her to death.
After the attack, Alam drove to Longsight Police Station to hand himself in for the murder of his wife.
A post-mortem examination revealed she had been stabbed multiple times in the chest, neck and back.
Mrs Alam had previously moved out to pursue her own life but Aftab became jealous and violent.
She had moved back in for the sake of her family though had reported Aftab to the police for domestic abuse as early as 2011.
Senior Investigating Officer Duncan Thorpe, of Greater Manchester Police, said: “Aisha was a mother-of-four children and had everything to live for.
“Her family remain heartbroken by what has happened. Aftab Alam not only callously took a life in a brutal and unprovoked attack; he has deprived four children of their mother.
“Our thoughts go out to all of Aisha’s family and friends and hope that this conviction will bring them some closure, so they can begin to rebuild their lives.”
During the trial the court heard how the couple’s relationship had descended into a spiral of domestic abuse after 29 years marriage
In 2011, a mother-of-four Aisha reported the attacks sustained from her husband’s abuse but did not want police to prosecute. He subsequently left the family home but retuned shortly after.
On his return to the family home their relationship was described as tempestuous.
“If you’re a friend, family member or neighbour who witnesses signs of domestic abuse report it to the police. GMP takes ALL reports of domestic abuse seriously and we can’t do this alone,” Officer Thorpe said.
“Domestic abuse is not acceptable under any circumstances and there are support services available for victims and families from the report to conviction.”
