Wigan Mayor-elect vows to make a difference and battle cancer after brother’s death from terrible disease

The new Mayor-elect of Wigan is using the inspiration of her late brother to ensure she can do all she can to help people in the area.

Phyllis Cullen, who is currently Deputy Mayor and ward councillor for Wigan West, will be unveiled in her new position on June 11.

She will take over from Billy Rotherham and told MM she is determined to make a difference.

“It is an honour for me to become the Mayor of Wigan and it means a great deal to me,” she said.

Along with her mayoral duties, Ms Cullen will also be investing in a new cancer unit – a subject which is close to her heart after her brother recently died from the disease.

“We are going to establish a cancer care unit in Wigan, with 12 beds for chemotherapy which will cost around £10,000,” she said.

She will be joined by Cabinet Minister for children and young people, Susan Louden, who will step down from her Cabinet role to join Ms Cullen in mayor ship.

The soon to be mayor is currently on the Licensing and Regulation Committee, Confident Places Scrutiny Committee, Wigan Access Committee, Friends of Mesnes Park Committee, Local Access Forum and Beech Hill and Sacred Heart Collaborative Leadership Committee.

She also part of Friends of Beech Hill Tenants and Residents group, Wigan Women’s Forum and is a member of Book Cycle and St Andrews Parochial Church Council.
