Oh… rats! Rodent infestation sees Wigan tapas bar closed down following faeces–filled inspection

A filthy Wigan tapas bar that allowed cooking utensils to become covered in RAT EXCREMENT has been immediately closed after health inspectors discovered the rodent infestation.

Deliciosa Tapas Bar and Restaurant on Gerard Street in Ashton-in-Makerfield was examined by environmental officers where they found rat droppings on cooking equipment.

Trays filled with cooking utensils were discovered covered in faeces as well as food that had been half-eaten by the vermin.

The takeaway was shut down on May 1 after it was served a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice which was backed by a court order, which magistrates approved today.

Alan Blundell, Assistant Director of Regulation at Wigan Council, said: “Wigan Council’s environmental health officers work closely with the borough’s food businesses to make sure they are serving high quality food in excellent conditions.

“The vast majority of these businesses have extremely high standards and work hard to make sure they provide their customers with an enjoyable dining experience.

“Unfortunately, our inspectors found this wasn’t the case at Deliciosa Tapas Bar and Restaurant, which is why they immediately served a notice to prevent them from serving food to the public.

“I am pleased the court has supported our actions.”

The council’s Business Compliance and Improvement Section applied for a Court Order to support the actions of their officers.

The business has now been served with a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order and is prevented from serving food to the public.

Deliciosa Tapas Bar and Restaurant will remain closed for the foreseeable future while health officers work alongside the business to address the issues and significantly improve standards.
