With two games to go and with the side resting safely in mid-table you could be forgiven for thinking that Bolton Wanderers and Dougie Freedman have little to play for.
Such is the Bolton manager’s determination and competitive streak however, that there’s an element of a year gone to waste in the Scot’s thinking as the season comes to a close.
So much so Freedman wants his side to put all their efforts into ensuring they win their remaining two Championship fixtures, starting with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Saturday.
“The reason we are trying to win the games is we’re professionals,” Freedman told his press conference.
“We want to be known as winners – it gives us a chance to get back to winning ways.”
Freedman’s side have been plagued by injuries all season, with the likes of Medo, Alan Hutton and Alex Baptiste joining long-term absentees on the sidelines.
“I look at the play-offs we’re only ten points away – that’s not a lot,” the Scot said.
“Where would we be without the loans? You can’t complain the whole season but it’s been difficult.”
The injury situation has allowed Freedman to give opportunities to some younger players however, with Hayden White, Andy Kellett and Chris Lester all making full first-team debuts against champions Leicester, who ended Bolton’s seven-game unbeaten run in midweek.
Freedman insists the young players have to be up to standard before they make the first team.
“I’m a huge believer in giving opportunities to young players but only if they’re good enough,” he said.
“I’m not a guy who will put them in because it’s a good PR stunt.
“If we can get through the summer with none of them feeling they’re too big for their boots, if they come back in the right shape and the right mindset then I’m sure one or two younger players can have a future.”
