Manchester City are awaiting a verdict from the Financial Fair Play committee (FFP) who are investigating the club for breaching cost-control regulations.
Uefa claim that the spending spree which transformed City into a footballing superpower has broken the governing body’s rules – which according to the Telegraph means the club could face severe consequences in the next 48 hours.
The Blues are under pressure from the FFP after their billionaire owner, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan, has financed the most successful period in the club’s history,
Since the club was purchased by the big spending Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008 they have become footballing heavyweights and are now major players on the European stage.
The Citizens have managed to lift major trophies including the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup – all of which would likely have been impossible without their willingness to splash the cash on world-class players.
City are currently unaware of what punishment they might receive if they are judged to have acted against Uefa guidelines.
The most likely outcome, if they are found guilty, is a financial punishment rather than banning City from European football in the Champions League.
On the other side of the city Uefa have confirmed that Manchester United are not under investigation as they have complied with spending procedures which penalises clubs making losses in excess of £37.2million.
City on the other hand have recorded losses of £149million since 2011, as they purchased the talents of Sergio Agüero, Samir Nasri, Gaël Clichy and Javi Garcia for hefty amounts.
In an attempt to balance their books City struck a sponsorship deal with Etihad, the official airline of Abu Dhabi, worth an eye-watering £350million over 10 years.
The Eastlands side have also been making headlines for their spending this week as it has been revealed that City pay out the highest weekly wage of any team in sport.
The Citizens astronomical wage bill averages out at £5,337,944 a week which piped iconic sports team the New York Yankees to the post.
