Barbara Knox drink drive arrest: Two-year driving ban for ‘ashamed’ daughter of Coronation Street star

The daughter of Coronation Street actress Barbara Knox has been banned from driving for two years by Macclesfield magistrates yesterday.

Maxine Ashcroft, 56, was found to have almost THREE times the legal blood alcohol limit when stopped in Knutsford, Cheshire, on the evening of March 10.

Ms Knox, who plays Rita Tanner in the Manchester-based soap, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving when en route to the police station to visit her daughter.

Ashcroft admitted drink driving and, in addition to her ban, she was fined £960 as well as being ordered to pay £85 costs.

She had been breathalysed at Middlewich police station, testing at 97 micrograms of alcohol per 100 ml of breath, 62 micrograms above the limit.

Solicitor Nick Freeman, defending Ashcroft, said his client was ‘thoroughly contrite and ashamed’.

He added: “She made a terrible error of judgement which is going to have terrible consequences for her. This was a classic case of alcohol anaesthetising good sense.”

Ms Knox, who has has appeared in Coronation Street since 1964, has been bailed pending further enquiries.
