Non-league matters: Ashton assassin Dale Johnson can fire us to promotion, says Hurst Cross boss

Ashton United striker Dale Johnson can fire the club to league success according to joint-manager Steve Halford.

The Robins, who sit in 5th place of the Evo-Stik Premier Division, are looking to make it three wins on the bounce at Stocksbridge Park Steels tomorrow.

Johnson netted the winner in Wednesday’s 2-1 victory over Chorley and Halford is confident of his hitman continuing his recent run of form.

“We all know he is a good player and was a top goalscorer at Halifax in the Conference before he unfortunately got injured,” said Halford.

“I have just told him to go out there and show what he is capable of, if he does well then as a result Ashton will do well.

“He wants to play at the highest level he can as we all do here and hopefully we can get promoted – it is a real possibility.”

The Hurst Cross boss also feels that league champion status is a certainty for the club if they can win all of their remaining six fixtures.

He added: “Wednesday’s result will not mean much if we don’t back that up with another win tomorrow.

“If we win the majority of our matches that we have left then I am sure we can get a play-off spot but if we win them all I feel we can win the title.”

The side will be tested in South Yorkshire tomorrow, with Matty Kosylo and Chris Lynch out suspended but Halford believes his men can step up to the challenge.

“We have had a good mentality this season and there hasn’t been much in this league but we just need to keep that going,” he added.
