Non-League Matters: Hyde boss Scott McNiven looks to the future after inevitable Skrill Premier relegation

Hyde will be playing for pride after their relegation from the Skrill Premier.

Scott McNiven’s side were on the end of a 3-0 defeat to Alfreton Town on Tuesday night, which was their 30th in the league, compounding what has been a truly dreadful season.

The Tigers, who are 23 points adrift at the bottom of the table on nine points, face Hereford United this weekend with little at stake other than preserving their diginity.

McNiven, who has remained positive throughout the campaign, is now looking ahead to next August and he is hoping that his young team will take a lesson from their experience and come back stronger.

“If we can learn from all the mistakes this year then hopefully we can get promoted straight back up next year and that’s what we’re building for now,” he said.

“It’s been a season of massive frustration. I’ve been pleased with about 80 per cent of our performances, strangely enough, and we got no rewards.

“That’s going to be the learning curve for next season.”

With nine games left to play, the Tigers can turn their attention to the future with some serious work ahead for McNiven, his staff and the in the summer.

“Getting new players in is one thing we’ve got to do and, for all their endeavour this year, the lads just haven’t been good enough,” he said.

“It’s hard to accept that when you’ve seen them play the stuff that they have but the results haven’t lied,

“Plans are well underway and we’ll see what we can do going forward.”

In the Skrill North, Stockport County face Guiseley for the second time this week after they lost 2-0 to their rivals on Tuesday.

Alan Lord had promised the County faithful an improved performance from their weekend game, but his side struggled to live up to his word and they failed to get on the scoresheet for the second consecutive game.

The result extends their winless run to six games and Lord struggled to pinpoint why the Hatters’ keep firing blanks.

“I can’t put my finger on it,” he said.

“We have players at the front end of the pitch who are renowned scorers, who know their positions, but it hasn’t clicked in the last few games.”

Meanwhile, Altrincham are away at Solihull Moors after their 3-1 defeat to Harrogate Town dropped them down into fifth, 12 points behind pace-setters North Ferriby United.
