Taxi drivers are being warned to be on high alert following a spate of knife-point robberies across Oldham.
A taxi driver had a knife held to his throat and stomach before being robbed by two men suspected to be involved in other attacks.
The latest robbery happened around 9.40pm on Wednesday February 12, when a taxi driver went to Richmond Walk to pick up a fare.
When the taxi arrived two people walked towards the car, one sitting in the front seat got and the second in the backseat behind the driver.
The man in the passenger seat pulled out a 10inch knife and held it to the taxi driver’s stomach. He told the driver to turn off the engine and demanded cash.
The person in the back seat held a knife to the driver’s throat.
The driver handed over the cash before they got out of the car and ran up Richmond Walk towards Manchester Road.
The taxi driver suffered slash wounds to his arm and hand.
Inspector Alan Humphries from Oldham Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “We have seen numerous acts of violence and anti social behaviour directed against taxi drivers in Oldham.
“This is the second knife-point robbery in a week but we have also had reports of taxis being pelted with stones and eggs in the past few weeks.”
Inspector Humphries said are working closely with taxi companies, Oldham Council and other partners to investigate and put a stop to further offences.
“It is not right that these people should be threatened in this manner and these offences will not be tolerated. They provide a valuable public service and they do not deserve this treatment,” Inspector Humphries said.
Inspector Humphries say that six arrests have been made so far. Four have been released on police bail pending further enquiries and two are in custody for questioning.
Inspector Humphries said: “I would urge taxi drivers to remain cautious and vigilant at all times and to remember the security advice that they have been given. If you have any information at all about these offences please speak to the police.”
Councillor Jean Stretton, Cabinet Member for Co-operatives and Neighbourhoods has condemned the attacks. He said: “These attacks are appalling and our thoughts are with all of the victims.
“Taxi drivers offer a valuable public service to residents and they should be allowed to go about their business without the threat of violence or intimidation.
“I would like to assure all of our taxi drivers that their safety is a priority for us and we are working with the police to ensure whoever is carrying out these attacks is caught and brought to justice.
“I would urge anyone who has any information to contact the police.”
One of the men is described as white, aged in his early 20s, slim and around 5ft 8in tall. He was cleanly shaven and was wearing a dark fleece type hooded top.
