‘Some People Are Gay. Get Over It!’ LGBT charity to display slogan on buses to tackle homophobia

By Rachel Buckley

An LGBT charity which tackles homophobic bullying and pledges support to same-sex marriage will display the message ‘Some People Are Gay. Get Over It!’ on 2,000 buses to promote their work.

Stonewall, Britain’s largest charity for lesbian, gay and bisexual equality, have asked its supporters to help raise awareness across the country by tweeting pictures of buses carrying the ads using the hashtag #stonewallbus, or posting them on its Facebook page.

The charity promises a range of ‘Some People Are Gay. Get Over It!’ merchandise to whoever sends in the best picture each week until the campaign ends on October 31.

In England and Wales, Stonewall attempts to reinforce the message that homophobic bullying must be tackled in schools, shortly after the start of the current school year.

Stonewall Deputy Chief Execute Laura Doughty, said: “More than half of lesbian, gay and bisexual young people still experience homophobic bullying and nearly all hear homophobic language there.

“The vitriolic campaign waged against equal marriage in the past months has shown that it is essential for us to run a moderate and straightforward bus campaign in support of the Equal Marriage Bill in Scotland.”

The Marriage and Civil Partnership Bill is currently going through the Scottish Parliament and Stonewall Scotland is campaigning to secure same sex marriage.

Stonewall is renowned for its campaigning and lobbying and some of its major successes include helping achieve the lowering of the age of consent, lifting the ban on lesbians and gay men serving in the military and securing legislation allowing same sex couples to adopt.

More recently, the charity has helped secure civil partnerships and ensured the recent Equality Act protected lesbians and gay men in terms of goods and services.

The famous slogan has previously been used on posters in a national billboard campaign in 2008, as well as t-shirts, mug and other goods.
