These heels were made for running: Stiletto-clad men race down Canal Street ahead of Manchester Pride

By Katja Stein

Men donning skyscraper heels competed in a 60m high heel dash down Canal Street earlier this week in preparation for Manchester Pride’s Big Weekend.

Manchester Pride and easyJet kicked off a week of fringe events with the easyJet Skyhigh Race in the build-up to Manchester Pride’s ‘the Big Weekend’, which takes place this weekend.

After a few knocks and bruises competitor Aaron Wilson was crowned winner of the event, and was rewarded with a bespoke orange shoe trophy and free return flights from easyJet to any European destination.

Darren Adams, Deputy Chief Executive of Manchester Pride, said: “Manchester has a reputation for being one of Britain’s most stylish cities and lots of people turned out to strut their stuff down Canal Street.

“It was a fierce contest and is something we hope will become a regular addition to Pride.”

The easyJet Skyhigh race was inspired by San Diego’s Amazing high heel race, which attracts hundreds of participants annually and is run in support of the LGBT community.

easyJet is an official sponsor of Manchester Pride’s Big Weekend which takes place from Friday August 23 – 26.

The event will attract tens of thousands of people from across the UK and Europe to Manchester’s world-renouned Gay Village to celebrate the festival.

Mr Adams said: “It’s great to work with easyJet on such a fun event to set the tone of Pride 2013.”
