Variety is the spice of life: Alternative Manchester nightclub Sixxis gears up for opening – with diversity as its aim

By Matthew Naylor

An alternative nightclub is gearing up for its opening night in Manchester this Saturday with live music from two North West bands.

Sixxis, situated in the old Brickhouse building on Whitworth Street West, will open to performances from Manchester-band Hell to Pay and Lancaster’s Massive Waggons, followed by a club night until the early hours.

The building was originally opened as a venue to control the overspill from the Hacienda, so has already played a key role in the history of Manchester nightlife.

Promoter Mike Hough, who also runs the Manchester-based HXC Wrestling, admits that as hectic as the preparations have been everything is coming together for the debut.

“We can’t wait to get started,” Mr Hough told MM.

“As the final touches are being put on the venue this week, it’s all a fantastic rush.

“We are expecting a sellout this weekend – word is definitely getting around.”

The club will be open every Monday, Friday and Saturday nights from the beginning of February, but several one-night-only events are scheduled for the Saturdays between now and then.

With the aim set at variety between the nights, Mr Hough says that, while the alternative scene is the primary focus, they want to attract the biggest scope of punters possible.

“We want to have variety as our identity, with all the focus on keeping the nights fresh,” he said.

“Sixxis wants to be all over the alternative scene – with lots of different nights for lots of the different people in Manchester.

“We’re thinking that the Monday nights, when we have Frathouse, we can attract a lot of students, but also the slightly older crowd.”
