Dare you enter the Sanitarium? Fear and insanity abound in Manchester at Grimm Up North’s horror double bill

By Kimberly Bond

Insanity and deadly night-time visitors are two themes of Grimm Up North’s latest cult horror movie double-bill in Manchester this week.

Sanitarium is a three-part horror anthology starring Freddy-legend Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street) and Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange) as Dr Stenson who narrates the creepy tales of three patients at a mental asylum.

Each horrifying segment has been drawn up and depicted by three different directors – Kerry Valderrama, Bryan Ortiz and Bryan Ramirez – and put together to show the horrors which have invaded the patients’ minds and caused their ultimate insanity.

Having been described as having elements from The Twilight Zone, Creepshow and Alfred Hitchcock presents, Sanitarium will keep you glued to the seat – if you dare to enter.

The second film in the running is a sneak preview of upcoming ultra-tense Static, described by Scream Magazine as ‘one of the best horrors in years’.

The film, which is released in cinemas on July 15 in the UK, depicts the story of a couple struggling to stay together after losing their child. They soon face more sinister problems however when a mysterious visitor turns up on their doorstep to warn them that they are in danger.

Lead actors Milo Ventimiglia and Sarah Shahi aren’t well known this side of the pond, but are up-and-coming names in Hollywood, and according to the guys from Grimm up North, their acting compliments the film perfectly.

A Grimm Up North spokesman said: “The casting of the three main characters is spot on and Milo as Jonathan gives a fantastic performance. The camera work is slow, methodical and beautiful and adds to the often slow and silent moments as the couple try to save their lives and their sanity.”

If the above sounds like your perfect night out and you are ready for some intense horror , the films will be playing at the Dancehouse Theatre on Oxford Road in Manchester on Thursday June 20 at 7.30pm.
