Gig review: Example @ Manchester Arena – March 1

By Matt Davies

Example rounded off his latest UK tour in style at the Manchester Arena with the type of energetic performance that has come to be expected of the lyrical star.

The charismatic singer and rapper – real name Elliot Gleave – showcased material from his three latest studio albums, whipping the excitable crowd into a frenzy in the process.

British dubstep producer Benga more than prepared the crowd for what was to come, and Baller B kept things ticking over before the star of the show took to the stage to a rapturous reception.

Kickstarts got the show underway as Example performed a trio of hits from Won’t Go Quietly, including the self-titled single which made the UK Dance Chart top spot in 2010.

Recent tunes from The Evolution Of Man were belted out as he showed that he is continuing to produce music to suit the needs of his ever increasing fan-base.

Come Taste The Rainbow and Close Enemies got the crowd just as animated as his opening outburst, before Example shifted towards some of his drum and bass hits.

Heavy bass tracks Let’s Be F***ing Stupid and Hooligans left the arena rocking before the London-born rapper slowed down proceedings with Watch The Sun Come Up.

All are provocative in their own individual way, and the response of the crowd highlighted the tremendous following that Example has built up in recent years.

They sang, bounced, shouted and screamed and gave it all they had as the standing area of the arena descended in to complete chaos.

Example features in Calvin Harris’ hit We’ll Be Coming Back and had the near sell-out crowd dancing and singing along at the top of their voices.

He rounded off the first portion of the gig with Say Nothing before returning for an encore that raised the roof.

Natural Disaster and The Way were belted out between some clichéd comments confessing his love of Manchester and its venues.

He finished the gig with Changed The Way You Kissed Me, the debut song from third album Playing In The Shadows which went straight to number one in the UK singles chart.

It brought the curtain down on a remarkable show leaving the crowd ecstatic and wanting more with a hectic summer festival schedule next up for Example.
